There are different kinds of heartbreak
One loss does not have priority of your heart
No matter the kind it'll be awhile before there's no more ache
Losing a friend can make a person shake
Watching the long relationship depart
There are different kinds of heartbreak
The loss of a parent makes you lay awake
Thinking about the what if's makes one want to restart
No matter the kind it'll be while before there's no more ache
Losing a spouse can feel like an earthquake
Not having that person can make someone feel jarred
There are different kinds of heartbreak
After losing a child one must be strong for their sanity's sake
A part of the parent died and is scarred
No matter the kind it'll be awhile before there's no more ache
All types of loss are terrible even if it's fate
One mourns the relationship no matter how easy or hard
There are different kinds of heartbreak
No matter the kind it'll be awhile before there's no more ache
One loss does not have priority of your heart
No matter the kind it'll be awhile before there's no more ache
Losing a friend can make a person shake
Watching the long relationship depart
There are different kinds of heartbreak
The loss of a parent makes you lay awake
Thinking about the what if's makes one want to restart
No matter the kind it'll be while before there's no more ache
Losing a spouse can feel like an earthquake
Not having that person can make someone feel jarred
There are different kinds of heartbreak
After losing a child one must be strong for their sanity's sake

Ellie, this poem feels like a musical breakthrough for you. Your use of refrain holds the poem together and establishes a melancholic sense of rhythm that I found to be moving and engaging. I'm looking forward to discussing this poem in class soon, and I will have a lot more comments for you then!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this poem. I can feel the intention with each description of the different pains. I think you captured the essence of these losses very well. The beginning feels like a disclaimer and I like that this poem starts with that. I think it sets the tone very well. These losses aren't ones most people think about all that often. The lines that repeat are really great too and drive home the feelings from the rest of the stanzas.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate and love how this poem doesn't talk about a one dimensional relationship but had so many facets to it and brought out the diversity and depth of different types of relationships, and the rhymes are really strong. Maybe the length of the lines could match up more but overall this was a great poem.
ReplyDeleteThis is a profound, heart-wrenching poem. Your use of simple, uncomplicated language lends a sense of rawness and sincerity to the experiences and perspectives offered by the speaker. Also, the lyrical feel and flow of this poem is incredible. The only thing I'd recommend is conveying each trauma and heartache in a more subtle way, as opposed to having the speaker articulate what the reader should feel in response to each loss.
